What type of hosting

Economy- does it cost you more money in the long run with addons?

Personal-why would you buy this, for a couple more $ you may as we get a reseller package?

Reselling-whats the down side to having this?

Re: What type of hosting

Want to start a small business at some stage in the near future.
But for now want blog, domain name and email.
Have a friend that wants his own domain name and email.
Need some sort of web designing program(doesn't have to be part of web hosting).

Re: What type of hosting

Hey Max,

You're best of looking at Shared hosting for what you need.

Make sure you buy a plan that allows at least two domains if you wish to host your friend.

Reseller hosting gives you a new control panel that you can make sub accounts that have their own control panel. This is good if you want to make your clients manage their own services.

In the long run switching hosting is incredibly easy so your best of to start small and move when you need to. No point waisting a couple of extra bucks a month if you don't need to.

Cheers,
Tim

Re: What type of hosting

Thanks Tim for the reply,
With shared hosting are you allowed to have 2 or more domain names with their own email address?
I thought that you couldn't have separate domain names that are not linked to a website!
What is better web builders on web-host sites or downloading your own and is there a cost difference?
Thanks
Max

Re: What type of hosting

RVSiteBuilder is popular for building websites. You don't need to understand HTML or CSS for example.

Regarding the email addresses for domains. It'll depend on how many add-on domains and email accounts you can have on your hosting plan.

Some hosts may reimburse you while others won't. Make sure to read the host's TOS before signing up.

Hey Max,

Yes you can create separate emails for each domain as long as you buy a plan that gives you multiple domains and emails.

Not a problem to have separate domains parked you don't necessarily have to have a website linked but all the features will be there.

Either one is ok anything free is never as good as something you pay for. I recommend my clients to look through templatemonster.com as they have thousands of high quality templates for a fraction of what a developer will charge for a design.

Cheers,
Tim

If they give you a pro-rata refund, they have a rubbish business model.

I could not agree more.
I don't even know why some of the budget hosts bother with such a system, especially when Paypal or equivalent take their 2% processing fee, it means you get bugger all back anyway.

Re: What type of hosting

Anybody that won't offer a money back policy to me means that they don't care or are ripping you off, no matter how small the amount of money is!
If you have good clients you shouldn't use pay-pal anyway.

A money back policy is okay if it's for an initial trial of services, but giving people a refund after they've purchased a service just because they've changed their mind doesn't seem sensible to me.

Re: What type of hosting

I agree with Vee on this.
A case in point is one of the guys posting on Whirlpool, he wants a refund off Exigent, as he decided that his $2 per month shared hosting account was too slow.
So he wanted to take advantage and get his 1.69 or whatever it was refunded, the important point to all this is that.
Lets say for interest sake that the account was $2 per month, and the client wants a refund, to cut a long story short, the bank / cred card processing fees, even if you used PayPal would cost the provider more than the $2.
That does not include the time it takes to manually process the payment, if for example the client wanted the $2 placed into a different bank account or whatever.
So the provider then needs to charge a processing fee of say $10 or more and so it hardly makes it werth it for either party.

To be honest, I don't really get your PayPal comment.
Paypal is just a payment processing system, a budget one at that, but still a payment processing system.
It has nothing to do with clients, a part from the fact that some, actually very few / no-one in my case, will only pay with Paypal, I have it set-up as a conveanience thing really.
But some people will refuse to use anything but Paypal to pay for things online.
As for your other comment, from a business prespective, it is pointless giving people refunds on ****ie little monthly amounts, $2 a month is bugger all and unless your paying on an anual baysis, it is just moronic and totally unreasonable to expect a refund on the un-used time, especially if it is going to cost the business more in both fees and time to process the refund.
Unless you love the idea of your hosting provider running itself into the ground?.

Re: What type of hosting

Thats exactly the point. If a provider is willing to give a refund then they have confidence in the ability to provide a service that people aren't going to want to bail on.
