Hey Guys,
I have currently got two domains alfahosts.com and alfahosts.net
We use alfahosts.net as our main advertising domain but we registered .com so we had it there and no one could buy it.
We are now thinking of getting a .com.au or .net.au. I only want to get one. I have these thoughts:
alfahosts.net.au : Relates to our main domain alfahosts.net but not common.
alfahosts.com.au : Is popular but doesn't sound right :P
Your thoughts?

Get both. If someone gets the .com.au and starts up a successful business trading under it, grabbing people looking for you as well, would you be happy?
If you have to choose one, get the .com.au.
But honestly, now you've announced it publicly, get both, asap!!
Also - make sure the alfahosts.com domain is forwarded to the .net ... at the moment it goes to the default cpanel page (add it as a parked domain to your reseller account, then turn on redirection to alfahosts.net).

yep definitely get both domain names. You can always have one url forwarding to the other. And its good for your brand protection to get them both.
With the whole which one do you use, depends on what feel your going for.
With .com.au it is the industry standard for most companies websites and most of their customers will presume that your website address will be your company name with .com.au on the end, if your an Australian business.
.net.au is still used by alot of businesses, such as ISPs and such.
iinet.net.au is example, iinet use .net.au as they're main website but also own .com.au which redirects to the .net.au , as they are a Net service provider it makes sense to use the .net.au

If I were you, I would better choose com.au because it looks more catchy and memorable.

I would look at it this way, what domains wouldn't you mind allowing your competitors to own?
I for one would grab .com.au and possibly not worry about the .net.au if you really don't want two domains.

Hi. I would get both the .net.au and the .com.au.
I also own the .org.au domain for my site as I provide services such as web hosting to not for profit and community organisations.

But you are not a non-profit entity so this domain could be taken off you if somebody reported it
