They're currently running an unholy Joomla/Wordpress hybrid that I plan to kill during an upcoming rebrand, but the site will continue to run Joomla.

They have a significant amount of self-hosted video content and the site itself will be quite 'rich media'. The last backup clocked in at around 30GB or so. It's hardly viewed at all however, so the actual bandwidth requirements are fairly low.

The current site is struggling under the GoDaddy hosting I inherited and I'm now considering moving the whole thing prior to the rebrand.

I've never needed to deal with VPS type solutions before and I'm a designer not a sysadmin - I won't be able to entirely self-manage this server. cPanel (preferably) or Plesk will be required for my day-to-day management.

Just wanted to start a thread on underhanded / shady techniques I've seen over the years from web companies when relinquishing clients. It really saddens me that some companies would just play so dirty. It all sparked from one incident this morning that just got me mosying down memory lane and realising how heavy handed some of these tactics have been.

Firstly the premise: A client contacts you and says they want a new website - their existing host, therefore, needs to be contacted to be moved away from.

From this simple commonly dealt with situation (and I've been in both sides having to give up clients and take clients) the amount of crazy tactics is astounding.

For the most part, most hosts are fine with it and cooperate. Some, however, get downright nasty.

The host last night that I had to delegate away from actually banned my IP address this morning so I couldn't login to their management console. I eventually figured it out after using my mobile phone and a few remote servers and contacting my client who could login with no problems.

I've had several companies change the details of the registrant and the registrant email to themselves so as to prevent a domain transfer between registrars, having then to fax in an authority to retrieve the key etc, etc.

When migrating over a MySQL server, we needed access to the database - the company quoted something like $800 to "export" the database over to us and that it would take several days and several hours. I could not believe it when I heard it but they said it as the client was none-the-wiser.

I had a web project that I had almost finished but which went way past deadline - this was a loyal client for almost 10 years - I had a few bits and pieces to do but I had to go overseas with my wife for our Europe trip we were planning for (booked many months in advance and the website for the client kept on getting tweaked - some clients are like that) and I then hunted around for a web company to "finish" off the little tid-bits left over. There was just a video pop-up window and a few other images to do.

What happened next was amazing: They completely trashed the entire design / backend / cms of the website and said it was awful... convinced my client to START FROM SCRATCH and then (here's the cherry on the cake) produced EXACTLY the same website for them that I did, down to the spinning logo... and charged them twice as much.

... and a year later they folded.

I mean it just doesn't get better than that. lol. Ohh actually, it does.

I've had another company actually charge a client a consultation fee for basically drawing up a quote to see if they COULD do a website. I mean, the entire point of getting a quote is to see if the new company can do the job. There was no mention of the consultation fee before that point, so I don't think it's even legal since the client hadn't signed anything nor agreed that the meeting would be anything other than a preliminary discussion on a quote. Don't balk at that: The consultation "figure" was more than 3 digits (and no, not including the stuff past the decimal place).
