Need Colocation in Sydney
|
|
HOPEFULLY this time I've got the right area
I need half a rack of colocation space in Sydney (have been looking at GlobalSwitch or Equinix).
Anyone have colocation services in either of these datacentres and recommend based on their experience? I notice that there are a couple of resellers of space in both these datacentres, but the prices fluctuate incredibly for similar offerings from company to company.

Andrew & adhc, i dont think neither of you guys read this correctly the first time.
From what i interpretted, he doesn't want every host throwing there quotes at him, he wants to no which datacenter is better.

OP also points out they have already checked out pricing in the two DCs and are not requesting any more

Hi Everyone,
We have not colocated in either of these datacentres before, and my main issue is access to our equipment. Im not sure how it works with both datacentres, but it will be important for us to have access to our equipment when we need to - is this possible if I am not the leasee of the space?
I have not contacted anyone yet regarding quotes, but we will need them when we decide which datacentre to use. For your information, our general requirements are as follows:
Our Location: North Sydney
Preferred DC: GlobalSwitch (closest)
Rack Access: when required (generally plenty of notice, however, sometimes immediate access may be required)
Rack Size: half-rack
Traffic: 30-50GB possibly
Additional Equipment: remote reboot ports required (3 or 4). We have all other equipment
Network Reliability: essential, redundant network
Scalability: need assurance that more space is available if required (short-term assurance, of course)
Lease Term: 12 months minimum
I am happy to answer any additional questions anyone may have as your input ultimately helps me.
Thank-you.
Anthony.

Hi Anthony,
With a half-rack we could provide you with supervised access to your equipment. Our office is located in the Sydney CBD - 5 minutes drive from GlobalSwitch, and we're staffed 24x7, so if you call up first, one of our guys can meet you down there within 15mins for emergency access. Planned Visits (>24hrs notice) won't a problem for supervised access.
Alternatively, if you go a full rack we can give you full access at GlobalSwitch.
We're certainly in a good position to provide for any future expansion for your colocation space, depending upon just how much you need. We can also give redundant network access to your equipment including PIPE NSW connectivity.
Drop an email across to sales@rackcorp.com and we'll send you pricing.

I'd recommend Equinix, we currently use them and are very happy and we don't have to worry about power limitations

Thank-you for the feedback.
I think our best option is GlobalSwitch as it's closer to us, and seems to be the better option. There are mixed feelings about Equinix in terms of fire, power, and space.
We are in two minds about going for a full-rack (although it does give us full access to our equipment anytime). It's quite expensive, and we really don't need that much space.
Can anyone here offer me a good price for 1/4 rack to 1/2 rack with assisted access to our equipment. I need a company that is close to the datacentre and has 24hour access. I understand that this may cost each time as we would be using your resources - this is fine. I have had one offer, but want to see what the market is like before I make a decision. Also, can you let me know about contract lengths. Im happy with 12 months, but so far I've been told 24 months minimum.
Thank-you.
Anthony.

Looks like some GS sales/reseller reps have been BSing to you
I would advice to go down to both dc's and take a look and go down with different providers to both DC's
fire is an issue with all DC's period, sh@t will hit the fan regardless
power is an issue with all DC in Sydney including GS,
space, only Equinix is actually building a new DC, not sure what GS will do since it will be out of space as well soon
with regards to access at GS you will always have issues when trying to get contractors or dell/hp support staff into the DC at 4AM in the morning if you dont have direct relationship with GS. I have heard mates in other companies who have really bad issues with servers down and no way of getting 3rd party access cause the hosts support staff wouldn't respond
we have racks at both DC's, not taking sides with either DC... but just the points you have raised seems untrue

Equinix have plenty of power. They are pretty much full now but will have a lot of space in a few months when their second facility is up and running (right next door to their current facility).
Fire suppression at Equinix is an issue, in that they use water based systems rather than FM200 or Inergen. Anyone who has ever been in there understands why they don't use gas - the floor area is just way too big.
Other than that, it is an extremely impressive facility - certainly far more impressive than anything we have in Melbourne.
