Hi, I am currently spec'ing up an idea to launch a corporate DC for some specific solutions around Storage and Remote working and I was wondering if anyone can offer advice of costs involved to set up a DC and what needs to be considered?
I know the size makes a difference, but I am basing it on 20 racks for now
Any comments appreciated

For 20 racks budget about $250,000 - $350,00. This will give you A/C, UPS and Fire Systems.

How about the cost for the actually land and building it?
That will be one of the biggest won't it?

I think that is a given ++ OT, He was asking about the phyiscal datacenter side of things, Like what jon said, Air, UPS Etc.
While we're a fraction OT, I'll add this:
I think all in all including everything you'd need a base of 1.2M
If your starting for complete scratch and need to get land and then build something add another million at least.
Gotta get all your hardware and Racks and onsite electricals and Networking, It all adds up FAST.

Depends, I suppose, if they already have the land as a part of the current infrastructure. But you'd think so. Even if they have the land, they should bundle that cost into the total commitment.
Another, what, $600K? Plus redundant grid access.

Hey,
Maybe talk to James from micron21 and matt from colocity?
I'm Pretty sure they both built Datacenters (one melbourne, one adelaide) they might be able to give you some accurate information instead of everyone hear throwing guesses @ you :P

I would have though that it's one of those things that if you have to ask you can't afford. Write a business plan, that will tell you if it's worth doing.

LOL While yes James would also be good to talk to and I know nothing of Matt I think you will find that after having built a couple of Data Centres Jon knows what he is talking about too and is probably the best qualified out of anyone on this forum to provide info

Jon's numbers are a good starting point for A/C, UPS & fire for a corporate DC
It's once you start looking at redundancy in A/C & UPS the numbers start to escalate. Add in a genset, access control, security camera's etc and it's amazing how it adds up.
Alot will depend on the building too that you are starting with, and how much basic building work needs to be done first to bring it up to a suitable level.
cheers,
Matt

The 2 are owned by different entities, as is Pegasus Melbourne. This is due for completion December 1st.

Confusion +1.
Sorry i didn't understand, do you partially own hostingshop or nar?
Where is melbourne pegasus going to be located (dont want specifics just a rough location)
Is dedicatedservers.net.au owner of peg then or is that same as hostingshop?
Cheers,
Chris
