Multiple domains, One Host
|
|
Hey guys,
This might is most likely a newbie question, but I can't seem to find an answer anywhere.
If I have a domain with hosting on a non-dedicated server, eg. like 90% of sites out there, and I want to purchase 3 extra domains to point to my host, do I need URL redirection or will I be able to get by by setting the name servers for each extra domain to the same as my hosted domain?
I'm thinking I'll need to let my host know that I'm point three new domains to their name servers and they'll have to add entries for them? Will they charge me for that?
How do you guys normally achieve setups like this?
Thanks in advance.

Hi there
You just need to have either Parked Domains, or Addon Domains available as part of your hosting package and you can do it... Exactly as you said too, just point the nameservers add it as a parked/addon domain and your done.
Edit: This *should* be free with your host

What Nathan said, Parked Domains will do the trick if you are using them all for the same web site.
If it's several web sites, use add-on domains. Be careful with add-ons, they can get a bit messy if you're not very careful.

Hey guys,
Thankyou for your responses! I just got an email back from my web host and they've told me I have to spend ~$40/year on a web redirect package per domain for something as simple as adding a NS entry!
I think they are just trying to make money out of me. Do you have any advice I can go to them with to counter their advice? Or am I simply out of luck?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Buttza are you on Plesk or cPanel? Depends on the provider as well....

Unless your control panel lets you set these things yourself, then you are out of luck I'm afraid. Change web hosts if you don't like it

This is called Multi Domain hosting. You should be allowed to host different websites in different directories, each ones using its own domain name. I would suggest you to pay attention on Plesk features amd to ask your web host how to create separate websites on your account.

Are the extra domains unique content or copies of the original site?
If they are copies then do a 301 redirect.
If they are unique content but linking to the original site then hosting them on the same ip will be fairly well useless in googles eyes and only work for users.
