cPanel Trial License... help.

Hello,

I have paid 2 invoices with a hosting company (who I will not mention just yet), and as per usual with Dedicated/VPS hosting these days, I had to pay for the cPanel license.

The agreement was made that I would pay for what it cost them to pay for the license, for convenience, and what-not. I have since discovered, using License Verification - cPanel Inc., that they in fact "purchased" a trial license, rather than a full (paid) license.

What exactly are my rights in a situation like this? Is it more of a "bad luck" kind of thing, or is there something else to it. I'd assume there would be some legalities involved as the agreement was for me to cover what they would be paying for the license.

I wouldn't have cared if they were making $5-$10 off my purchase, as that's what business is. However, making money on something that isn't even what I am paying for (a full license) isn't really what you'd call good business.

Look forward to hearing the responses.

Regards

Have you contacted your hosting provider?

Cheers

I have. Their reply was that "it doesn't work that way".

EDIT: After I explained that what they were doing was unfair to me, and that I deserve some reimbursement.

Re: cPanel Trial License... help.

How long ago did you order this VPS?
If they have not actually purchased the cPanel license i've found that some IPs will come up under the cPanel license verification as 'trial' if theres no license on the IP at all.

If you've got access to cPanel/WHM, and its a trial license there will be big bright warnings saying TRIAL VERSION, so you'll know.

You can also order your own cPanel licenses and just get your provider to install cPanel, http://www.instantcpanellicense.com/ $15USD per month, might be a bit more then your provider because of internal licensing but atleast you know you're getting what you paid for.

ConnextHosting,

Initially, there isn't a warning sign. Towards the end of your period there is a warning sign. I have been with them for about 38 days. Therefore, have paid 2 invoices.

There is cPanel/WHM on the server, as I have been using it.

Ah, seems they've just not renewed the license then. Just request they cancel the cPanel license in their system so they don't charge you for it and order it yourself from a cPanel licensor. It's not a hard process, it just authorises your IP address - I think all you have to do is run a command to update the license file.
