I maintain a social information website and need an email host/system (only as my hosting co doesn't provide this service - grrr) to facilitate sending 500+ (and growing)newsletters once or twice a month. I want to keep the newsletters primarily in a text format. I will also soon need the facility to collect paid subscriptions to the website. Simple request I know but where do I start, how much should I pay, Au or offshore?

I see you have posted a request in the advertising section, and that's your best course of action at this stage. Plenty of good providers here, all of whom can provide the services you're after.

Names that spring to mind when I think of emailing newsletters include Constant Contact and Aweber.
There are some australian suppliers, but their names escape me atm - sorry

Thanks. I did try Constant Contact but had some difficulty with trying their trial. Spoke to someone else who had the same trouble. Maybe it was just a glitch at the time - will try again and also look at Aweber. Again thanks - should you think of any others I will stay posted (pardon the pun).
