Hosting Market Share

Hi All,

I've been trying to find some Hosting market share information without much luck. Does anybody know a source of this information or perhaps a industry report? If not, perhaps somebody with market knowledge could list say the 10 largest hosting companies?

Thanks,
Aaron

Re: Hosting Market Share

Not sure exactly where you could get that info. ABS might be a good start, but I doubt you'd get any identifying info (more likely just industry figures).

You'd probably also need to categorise your stats as there are obviously different types of 'hosts' for different sectors.

Re: Hosting Market Share

I think even defining what the market is, let alone who's got what share would be hard. Even harder than the slippery numbers that were dialup many years ago.

eg.

The number of megabits your customers generate?
The number of billable customers?
The number of domain names delegated to your name servers?
The number of IP addresses/servers/racks/etc?

ie. Hostworks probably don't have as many individual customers as, say, Webcentral but they have some big sites.

Where does Akamai fit in with delivery of sites such as Qantas, News.com.au, some of ABC etc?

Does Global Switch or Equinix count as part of the hosting market or not? Or just their customers?

Re: Hosting Market Share

I would probably say revenue is the biggest factor in measuring size. WebCentral/MelbourneIT are No1 and then Hostworks would probably be second. Most of the other players are privately owned so there is no easy way to find out "TRUE" figures.

I don't think DataCentres count, only the actual Hosting Companies.

I guess the info you find when searching the net should be taken with a grain of salt.

Yesterday, I saw a figure stating that 99.5% of all web servers in the world are running some form of linux....

Ha, not that much. I've always seen Netcraft as one of the most legitimate sources of this sort of info: http://news.netcraft.com/

That puts Microsoft distribution at ~one third.

More on topic, they actually sell this sort of data here:
http://news.netcraft.com/hosting-provider-server-count

No, I have no financial gain from them just happen to have been hitting their website for the past 10 years.
