Looking for a host: Australian, VPS, Ruby and.... listed
|
|
I'm working with clients at the moment who only want to go with a listed entity for hosting.
I'd rather not get into the arguments as to why this is not a great metric to measure a hosting company by - I've already used them all and they will not be swayed.
However, I need:
- Must be Australian (or at least have Aussie datacentres)
- Managed VPS
- Multiple sites/domains
- SSH access
- Must work well with Joomla!
- Must be able to install & run Ruby
- Must be a listed entity
- Prefer cPanel
I tried to post in the advertising area, but wasn't allowed: must've misinterpreted the 'request' part of the title.
I suggested at least three of the guys who post regularly in that area, but unfortunately the 'listed' requirement is the sticking point.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi,
Can you clarify 'listed'? I assume you mean a publicly listed company? Not many of those around that I know of.
In terms of your requirements, you can run everything you've listed on a VPS since you have complete control over it.
Cheers,
Joel

Thanks Joel,
Yeah, I mean publicly listed - plus I'm picky enough to want a good one. Life's too short to waste on bad hosts.
I know I can install whatever I want on a VPS, but I'm a p*** poor sysadmin. I'm after a managed VPS - so someone else can help me get that all sorted before I unleash my programmer...

No worries
I can't say I really follow the legal structure of other hosts but I do know MelbourneIT is listed, who own WebCentral. I'm sure there are others out there, but I'm afraid I can't help you any more.
Try pointing your client to this thread and then get their feedback regarding using the most well known publicly listed SME host in Australia.
Cheers,
Joel

lol - I'd already ruled out WebCentral and MelbourneIT for those reasons. At least now I have something more than my own opinion to point to.

Many of the providers on here, company or not, a quite good providers and I don't doubt any other providers ability to provide you with the services you require.
Based on what I've seen (personal opinion), not many of the providers on here are a "publicly listed" company, and most of them are privately owned companies, but are most definitely Australian owned.
Micron21, Crucial Paradigm, Oz Pacific, Ausweb....all Australian companies, all Australian owned and operated and from what I am lead to believe, all top quality providers that can meet your requirements. (These are just names rattled off my head, in no particular order of preference or relations)
No, this is not a recommendation but purely a comment of observation at the most.

Once again, as above, many companies on WHT-AU, although not publicly listed, would be able to provide a suitable VPS service with management that would meet your requirements.
When you say you want a good one, stating they are a publicly listed company doesn't make the company any better than a private one or vice versa, and from what I've seen, private companies tend to have a bit more of a "finger on the button" approach where as the Managing Director/CEO/Boss Hog/whatever you want to call them, has a bit more of a personal interest in the company, it's growth and more importantly, it's clients.
You mention a "good one"...but define a good one?
Sure, I mean, do your research, ask questions and even ask a company, private or not, for a trial service.
Just food for thought...nothing more
Cheers,
Dale E

Hey Dale,
Thanks for your input, but if you'd read my first post you'd see I'm fully aware that being a publicly listed company doesn't make it a good one.
This is not my requirement, it's that of my clients.
It's not something I want to argue about here - I've done my best to make a case for several of the hosting companies I've worked with in the US as well as Crucial Paradigm here. These guys have put their foot down and that's the end of it.
Has anyone heard anything good about Macquarie Telecom?

there is Hostworks - I believe they are listed.
Not sure they can give you what you want, but they are listed I think.
www.hostworks.com.au
There really aren't many listed web hosts.
BlueFreeway is another one - but you'd better do your research on what others say about them that's for sure.

Thanks Swish.
I know - it seems that in this case the functional requirements and the constraints are mutually exclusive.

Could be.
I'm certainly not up with current events but I thought Macquarie were involved somehow and someone aquired them not all that long ago.
But, at the end of the day ... who cares - not I

You could well be right
I don't follow it either
This thread does bring up an interesting point though as to how many hosts are actually publicly registered companies as opposed to privately owned or private companies without public stock

As far as I'm aware, the only specialist hosting providers that are listed companies in Australia are those which have already been mentioned, namely:
- WebCentral/MelbourneIT
- BlueFreeway
- Macquarie Telecom
Hostworks is owned by Broadcast Australia, the parent company of which is publicly listed.
There are quite probably other companies that are more general IT providers/systems integrators that can provide hosting whom are publicly listed.
Not to mention some of the Telco's such as Telstra, although I'm quite certain they (and probably some of the others on the list above) can't support the combination of technologies you're looking for.
