SMS Messaging?

Does anyone know of a mobile (3g or GSM) which can be used as an SMS modem?

I.e it can be plugged into a PC via USB and third party scripts can interact with the vendors software you normally install on your PC to backup contacts/transfer pictures etc? I.e we want to be able to send/receive SMS messages via email but we want to do it via our own SIM cards

G'day Spirit,
That kind of begs the question, why not a desktop solution and email2SMS provider?

Cheers,

Mike

Unreliable amongst other things; we'd also like the ability to send txt messages when the Internet is down or offline...

Phones do wierd things and run on batteries and crap. Any reason to not just go out and buy a GSM modem?

Phone should be plugged in to mains power 24/7 so this shouldn't be an issue.

I'm after a phone to do this at this stage. Most GSM modems will only do GSM which will be pointless in a few years

Re: SMS Messaging?

i know most nokias can be plugged and sent via the nokia software, some older models ive done it with in the past where the 6230i, 6233, one other that i cant think of. But if you ask your local mobile shop, ie optus, 3, they should be able to tell you, if not might be worth a search on www.gsmarena.com

only thing im not sure of is how easy it would be to interface with nokias software if you went down that track, im pretty sure most nokias can do it though, but more like you put the sms into their program and it sends through usb to the phone and beyond.

good luck tho, let us know what happens

Re: SMS Messaging?

You will be able to send/retrieve SMSes from most mobile phones using AT commands (like the old dial up modems!) if you install the driver that allows your phone to be used as a data modem (it will be available as a COM port). The problem is most drivers are only for Windows so it is only a Windows solution...

For more information you can google for: SMS and AT commands

Re: SMS Messaging?

We run a bunch of Wavecom GSM modems. They plug into the serial port of the server and we control them with http://smstools.meinemullemaus.de/

The software runs as a daemon and you can pretty much do whatever you like with it, ie whatever is written too a specified directory in a specific format is sent via SMS to the number in the header of the file.

Hope this makes sense and helps.

Cheers,
Alan

I use my blackberry as a tethered modem with is very handy, not played around much with the software, but there might be something for it that can do what you need.

Some 3G USB modems also look promising... There is almost an endless amount of options

Re: SMS Messaging?

I would have thought any windows based mobile device would do the job, like the NextG JasJam

Re: SMS Messaging?

Eww. Steer clear of the Jasjam at all costs (they're EOL from Telstra now anyway).
