Moving to Melbourne

I and my wife will move to Melbourne next year. Wondering where is the cheapest house renting? Still maintain affordable quality and safety of course. Trying not to exceed $800 /month. Any suggestion please?
Thanks.

I just read about Dandenong here Dandenong, Victoria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and it indicated public transportation in Dandenong is poor. For starting, we prefer to use public transport, instead of buying a car. Also, closing to Swinburn University of Technology is better.
Any preferred location for those above conditions?
Thanks.

I'm not 100% sure about rental prices in Melbourne, but I'm not sure whether $800 a month for rent will find you anything remotely close to where you want to be, it will be somewhere completely out of the way where it will be a hassle to catch public transport into the city.

Depending on the amount of rooms you want, you will find that $250-300~ per week for something close-ish to public transport in that area.
$800 will not be enough regardless

Your best bet is finding another 2 people who will share a small house or unit with you, a lot of the college & uni students normally rent out with 3 other people, so each person pays approx $100/week which works out to $400/month for yourself (fairly cheap and allows you to save).

Thanks for updates. The reason we set a bar of $800 is from our friend, who studied in Melbourne before, but she's back to Vietnam from this February. It seems price changed already, or it's for student only.
If we spend up to $1200 / month, which part of VIC do you suggest please? I know we can share with other, but want to check if we can afford ourselves first. Just need an unit with 1 bedroom.
Thanks.

For 1200 you will get a lot more. Especially if you aren't looking for anything too large.
Do you like the city or would you prefer the suburbs? You can get a 1 bedroom unit in either.
Either way, I would suggest the East side, the West is slowly coming good, but unfortunately still lacks the transport the is available in the East.
