Nudging

As I have always understood the rules for posting threads in the offers section the rule is one thread per week with no nudging

By nudging I understand that to mean the OP adding another post for whatever reason in order to "nudge" the thread back into the limelight again in other words have it appear in the new posts section

This is as opposed to them responding when a prospective client has a query and obviously that is perfectly acceptable

There are several threads around now that seem to have this happening on an almost daily basis

Re: Nudging

But the rules say that you cannot BUMP ( Bring up my post )

Adding another offer to the original one should be alright? shouldn't it :P

I see where you are coming from though :P But i maybe they could edit their original post instead of posting another? that would fix the 'problem'

Daniel.

Re: Nudging

I see a bumping/nudging as a post with no content purely designed to bring the thread back up again. I think that when providers post useful content in their threads then it should be OK.

Re: Nudging

Daniel is spot on that they should edit their original post if they wish to add something

For example you open a thread to promote product A on a special offer say then a couple of days later you add another post to promote product B in the same thread or add a bit of additional info that to my mind is nudging

I would say it is certainly against the spirit of the rules because otherwise you could add something to it every day and keep it appearing when someone does their daily visit and clicks on new posts

Re: Nudging

I am lead to believe that after a set time of post creation in the "Offers" forum, a post cannot be edit...someone correct me if I am wrong?

I have tried to edit our January offer thread to which the option is not provided, so I assume this is the case?

Re: Nudging

only two hosts have been advertising lately (was going to name them but wont..)

i dont really see those threads as Nudging/Bumping

from what i know after a period of time the thread is locked and you cant edit it.

WHT-AU doesnt really have the problem of bumping threads but hosts should be careful.

from personal experience when we run specials some clients upgrade from one server to another so some different server spec becomes free hence you would like that to be advertised as well...

pretty sure the MODS will keep an eye on it.

if not Angus you can remind them..

I know exactly where you're coming from and that raises the question of why there is a restriction of one thread per week

To me, it is is so only one offer per week can be promoted and for example if someone runs a special for server X and an existing client upgrades freeing up another server which is then added to the thread

Is this not a new and completely different offer that should have to wait for the next week to be created in a new thread?

Where I see it as a larger problem is where an offer is posted the next day or a couple of days later there are subsequent posts adding things that to my mind should have been in the original offer

Examples might be

Original post offers a discount of X% off all shared hosting plans then 2 days later new post saying oh by the way you can have a free domain name with this offer

Anther example is where there is an offer for dedicateds posted then the next day or a couple of days later there is a new post saying oh here is our network and data centre info or here is a speed test link or an IP to ping

In one case the the actual offer is being enhanced and in the other basic information relating to the offer is being added

In both situations, to my mind these additional snippets should be added to the original post via editing

In comparison you have the HS thread re triple BW where someone asks if it applies to full racks which were not mentioned in the original offer and a reply comes back saying yes they are

Yes the original offer has been enhanced but it is by way of clarification in direct response to a query by an interested party and I see no problem with that

Be interesting to hear others thoughts

Be my pleasure but part of my point is I shouldn't have to if everyone plays within the spirit of the rules

Re: Nudging

does the one post per week still apply ?

i see two threads by the same user within couple of days in the Dedicated offers section..

Re: Nudging

Its my understanding additional posts to threads in the advertising forums won't show up in "Get New Posts"; unless someone other than the thread starter posts to them, i.e no bumping of posts by thread starters.

Is this not the case?

Re: Nudging

Yes someone may want to point out the one thread per week limit to the owners of the forums lol

Nope it isn't and one of the main reasons for this thread

Re: Nudging

I agree if its one post per week then its ONE POST per week, the math is not that hard surely? Answer questions raised directly thats fine, but not extra waffle.

Mind you another pet peeve is when people post in an advertisers thread saying things about the offer ie not viable, how can you do it..one such post popped up today...its not upto anyone else but the advertiser to determine their prices...

Re: Nudging

Anyone know of a vBulletin plug in to fix this? Perhaps we can suggest it to Gary?

Yes, which is the very reason I tend to try to stay right out of these "debates" and actually get some work done
