Using Colo...the logic behind it?

Hi guys, something which has bothered me which Australian colo providers is a VAST majority of the providers charge around $1 per gb....I think this has got to be some sort of insanity.

How can they offer a 600gb dedicated server they own for say $200-$250 but then want to charge $1 per gb for a server you provide?

I understand the pricing when you buy mbit/s but not the whole per gb....I understand that it's likely to be related to overselling their own bandwidth as they know not many people will use 600gb of bandwidth on the server.

No matter how I look at it, it seems very silly to own your own server and have it co-located as it will probably cost more to do it and you get less.

I'm not even close to an expert with this industry but I wouldn't mind an answer please

Well, I know in the US per GB isn't really to much different, I mean, you can expect 75 cents or so from some places but generally its still super overpriced and not until you get some volume behind you is it worth it to colo. As you mentioned, Mbps and billing in the 95th makes it much more economical to colo.

Re: Using Colo...the logic behind it?

The $1 per GB is probably the retail rate, subject to negotiation. If you want to colocate, then negotiate.

1$ per Gb is retail rate indeed. Most providers will do bulk data packages e.g. $100 for 250Gb, etc

Simple answer not everything is as it offered, just because someone is saying they are providing X doesn’t mean they can actually delivery it !
