    Hosting in Australia
    Hi All,

I run a forum and need to find a new host, the story goes that it started out of SMF 2 being hosted by Webcity (Cloud Pro), as my community grew I decided to move to Xenforo forum software.

Once I moved to Xenforo, my friends at Webcity kept e-mailing me weekly saying my site was consuming too many resources, I also learnt that Webcity lock down certain PHP functions which resulted in functionality such as Facebook integration not working.

I have a friend who has his own webserver so my forum is now sitting on his server, but I keep getting complaints from members that they cant access the site, as such I have decided to go back to a commercial hosting provider.

I have been calling a few hosting companies and they all say I need a VPS and that my costs will be between $80 - $250 per month. Now I offer my forum FOC to my members, I don't run add' nor do I want to, I am also told that I need some serious UNIX skills to run my VPS which I do not have. I can happily manage my site though cpanel and ftp\www access.

Is there a web host out there offering hosting at a decent price that will allow me to run my Xenforo forum with e-mail, MySQL that does not restrict PHP functions ?

    My Site Stats

Storage - currently use 3 gig, need 10 gig for growth
Monthly transfer - average around 14-16 gig, so would like about 40-50 to ensure I don't get hit with excess charges.
    Mailboxes - I have 5 provisioned, I don't expect I will need anymore than 10
    Concurrent Connections - 50-70 guests 20-30 users + robots

I do not charge for my site, I do collect some donations which are fed back into supporting members, so I am footing the bill from own pocket, I don't mind doing this, but $70- $250 per month is way too exy.

Can any recommend me a hosting provider ? I have been told to stay away from garage setups and go for a host with servers in a commercial data center in Australia.

    thanks

    Chris

    Dear Chris

To be honest it sounds like whatever your hosting is very heavy on PHP which would be CPU.. the database access could also require a fair amount of IO… so I doubt this really fits into any shared hosting platform… happy to be proven wrong but if your site consumers servers and resources its not going to work well in a shared environment where most providers these days use software such as Cloud Linux to limit your CPU.

This is why people are saying look at a Virtual Dedicated Server.. however the question then is how much memory and CPU do you need.. for you the more you get the better the faster your forum software will run, however the catch is the more resources will cost you more and more money.

You could look at a small virtual machine but it might not come with enough memory and CPU which you require to meet your budget …. So you do have a lot of things to think about.

I’d also ask what is wrong with your friends server is he hosting this from home?

An option which you could consider would be buying your own physical server so your forum software would run on your own hardware, within a commercial datacentre (like Micron21) this would give you massive speed advantages and your site would run as fast as the hardware you use.

Hope this gives you something to think about

    Kindest Regards
