Going rate for Class C IP address blocks?
    Hi guys,

What is the current going rate for class C IP address blocks?

We have some historical blocks inherited from past business acquisitions and wondering what they are worth.

Class C hasn't existed for about 20 years, if you start talking CIDR ranges we might be able to give you a ball park figure.

Usually around $14 - $16 an IP if one was going to buy through a broker but does depend on how big your ranges are.

Sorry to burst your bubble but... I believe your space may not be marketable at this point in time.

As I understand it, you've got legacy space from the AUNIC to APNIC migration and aren't an APNIC member.

To be able to transfer the IP ranges (and i'm guess its a few /24 or /23 allocation) you'll need to move it from the legacy pool to regular pool. You'll also need to become an APNIC member and pay membership fees (assuming you can prove the space is yours to begin with).

Now the new holder (your buyer) needs APNIC membership. Which means they'll automatically be eligible for a /21 under the current policy. Unless you have a legacy /16, I don't think you'll get a high price for it because its small space and organisations that need it can already get a /21 or use tricks such as registering new companies / trusts for extra IPs.

Assuming $14 x 256 = $3584 (plus stamp duty, gst, 20% apnic transfer fees etc).

For just $2,350/yr an organisation can get a /21 + $500 initial setup.

Now if they have already received their /21, they could go and register a company for under $400 and apply for a fresh /21 (or 2 x /22) for just $2800 bucks without the risk of buying legacy IP space that might already be routed or filtered, or have a bad reputation.

Just recently we assisted a customer who wanted to purchase a /21 from APNIC and they ended up with a 43.27.xx.xx/21 allocation.

I believe that this allocation was returned back to RIPE sometime ago who in turn allocated it to APNIC. Some of the IP's he got had bad reputation and took a bit of cleaning up to do.

So even still purchasing a /21 from APNIC today, you'll still get that same issue of having IP's routed elsewhere and bad reputations.
