Usually the livechat plugin is a very light Javascript snippet, which is pasted on the hader/footer of your website and usually doesnt cause performance issues. Btw , what live chat are you using ?

Does it slow down your website in particular, or should it have a performance impact in general?

Javascript (which powers most live chat plugins) does take a performance toll. To ease the impact on the visible page load for the end user, many websites load heavy-weight JS to the end of their page's code so that it is loaded once the page has rendered.

If you're able to share some more details we can assist further.

As other users here already mentioned, chat scripts are usually very light weight and you can put them at the end of your html codes.
You can also defer loading them until the page has fully loaded.

When it comes to Live Chat Software, there are so many different ones out there, each with its own unique features and qualities. Live Chat does not necessarily slow down your website. It does, however, use Javascript "for most" and some do not require anything more than a simple integration into your CMS (if you're using a CMS). The long story short is that Live Chat does not impact the load speed of your website.

What does slow down your website is oversold web hosting, over-crammed servers and poorly maintained support. Another factor to consider if a slow website is giving you a reason for concern if you are using a CMS such as WordPress, Joomla, Drupal etc that you have not installed too many plugins, especially plugins that are not required. You can of course still run your site with a varying range of plugins, hooks and so on, but you may want to consider moving from a Shared Web environment to a VDS or Dedicated environment allowing your site greater performance with its own dedicated resources.

I hope this helps and if you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.
