Backup Option

Hi,

I have two standard winxp dual core systems with 1TB HDD's each, for our design company. We have networked them to three MAC systems we use for work. I do manual backups using an external HDD but its becoming to time consuming.

What can i add to both machines that can do nightly backups for me?

Cheers,

Re: Backup Option

If your just looking to back up to an external hard drive or another server i just use Norton Ghost, you can set schedules on when you would like the backup to run and at what time and day, you can also set it to save only one recovery point or many recovery points its up to you. Hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to ask as i have used it before

Re: Backup Option

Centralise your files..

Onto one server so all client data, templates, PSDs run off the one UNIX machine. Organise everything properly using WIP and job numbers or client names inside the wip.

So when you have to backup you only need to back up one machine. Sus out some veritas software.

Re: Backup Option

Using a Linux machine and run samba or something and automate your backups using shell scripts or rsync your files off site.

If you had a Windows machine something like Cobian Backup might help? Otherwise you can't go past a raid 1 setup with decent off site file management or perhaps backing up to a external USB drive for recent projects.

You can automate that in most OS's.

Re: Backup Option

If your wanting to back up some important client data to an external source, we have used www.mozy.com in the past, its pretty good, and their software schedules and you pick what you want... might be a little sluggish going to the us. But it was a lot cheaper than other options.

Re: Backup Option

SAMBA runs like a dog though specially when you are opening large files.. might be the only option you have though

Re: Backup Option

Hi,

We have Norton Ghost and a 1TB NAS which supports USB 2.0, FW400, Network.

What would be the best connection for speed if the NAS had to backup daily about 600GB Data?

Re: Backup Option

Have you looked at running an X-Serve for your file storage and using time capsule? It's VERY simple to use and takes care of itself.

Alternatively depending on how much data you're generating daily - there are a lot of broadband based backup solutions which store your data offsite and provide you with a true disaster recovery solution, should your office burn down or somethign terrible like that happen.

Re: Backup Option

Hi,

The NAS is gigabyte, and would use Norton Ghost as the software to do automatic backups. Our current space is 300GB we plan to add another 200GB over the next 4 months.

Would the 1TB NAS gigabyte running norton be adequate to do daily backups or do I have to go for something completely different?

Dont like to say this often but have to agree with our new post whore David.hooters

X-Serve will work well too if you got the cash to spend.

Re: Backup Option

Hi,

Yes have gone with the norton ghost. and 1TB NAS Gigabit. I haven't yet played around with norton.

*But backuping 500GB data nightly how long does it take. I know compression is involved. Or does norton detect newly updated files and only backs up them adding to the existing nightly backup from the night before?

Cheers,
