Copying Emails to new host...
|
|
Hi,
I have a client that has all of her emails stored on her server and is using webmail access. In creating her new site she has moved hosts and no longer has access to the emails on her old server.
Other than changing the DNS details and downloading and changing back is there any other way to do this - I am running up against brickwalls finding information.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer me!
Emma

You can try connecting to the old pop server via IP address instead of mail server name (such as mail.domain.com) - if the account still exists it should work ok.
Cheers,
Joel

Do the old and new host both use cPanel? If so, use WHM's "Copy an account with account password" feature to copy the whole account, e-mails included, across.

I recently discovered a cool trick for doing this if the control panels are different.
Set up duplicate versions of each mailbox (one connecting to the old server and one connecting to the new server) as IMAP accounts in Outlook (or whatever client you use) then you can just drag and drop the messages from the old server to the new server.

Oh that's just brilliant Mike, we need a special repository for great ideas that are needed from time-to-time.

if you have shell access on the new server, you could use imapsync. worked great on a massive migration i did recently between two different mail servers.

I can't take the credit for the idea, I found it somewhere via a Google search.

Depending on the mail client and size of emails, I've found this is best done in batches - a few dozen rather than a few hundred for example.

If you've got a linux box handy have a look at imapsync: imapsync | freshmeat.net
